GR COMIC CON 2015: The Knightmage Interview

Along with the lovely Candy of Sweets4aSweet Cosplay, I got to interview the badass Michael "Knightmage" Wilson, who is famous for his epic cosplays such as Spawn and Predator.  Michael is not only a talented cosplayer, he's also an awesome guy who is using his skills to do charity work for kids!

What is your favorite cosplay in your arsenal?

It depends on where I'm at.  If I'm at a convention, it's usually my Predator, or Spawn.  If I'm at a charity event, obviously Batman because everyone loves Batman.  And Super Grover is actually a good one for charity events.

Who or what are some of your influences for cosplay?

For cosplay itself, just the cosplay community as a whole.  I love seeing other peoples' costumes, I love the energy.  For why I cosplay, it's for the charity aspect.  I love giving back, and I'm able to do that through cosplay.

You've obviously done some amazing cosplay, like Spawn, very intense cosplay.  If time and physics were not a factor, what would be your dream cosplay?

Voltron.  The answer is always gonna be Voltron.  [Note from Em: he actually shot this answer out before I even finished the question, which still amuses me]

Do you have any funny or nightmarish stories about cosplay?

It's Murphy's Law, if it can go wrong, it's going to go wrong.  All right, now this is something I tell people at panels all the time, especially guys: make sure you're wearing a dance belt.  One of the first events I did I was wearing Spider-Man, and...I'm not a small dude.  The suit was a little tight, and I didn't know much about cosplay, and I didn't know you were supposed to do all that.  So I was kind of...exposing myself...a little bit.  I didn't really realize it until I saw pictures of it, and I was like "OH MY GOD."  So....yeah.  Wear a dance belt.

Okay, that kind of ties into the next one: do you have and advice to give to cosplayers?

Wear a dance belt.  (laughs)  My biggest thing is, just do it.  Don't worry about what you look like, don't worry about the character, don't worry about what other people think.  Just do it.  Do it for yourself, just make yourself happy.

Obligatory Shia GIF is obligatory.
