34 days of WrestleMania: How does WrestleMania 2000 hold up?

Also known as Wrestlemania 2000, this year's showcase of the immortals can be summed up with the phrase: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

Once again in Anaheim, California, this year's Wrestlemania had a lot. In retrospect, I'm not so sure that's a good thing. There were quite a few things that made me cringe, some that made me smile, and a few that made me jump with excitement. However, the ridiculous amount of star power in this Wrestlemania is amazing in retrospect. The main event itself is incredible to even contemplate. Triple H. The Rock. Big Show. Mankind. Split those into two matches, and they're both still main-event caliber. Then there's all the tag teams and the "mid-card" talent. What an absolute mouth-watering amount of talent on this card. Then why did it end up being so meh?!

Favorite Match:

  • Triangle Ladder Match, Edge & Christian vs. The Hardy Boyz vs. The Dudley Boyz

    • Holy S***. This match had simply everything and put each one of these tag teams a step above where they could before. Simply stole the show. It's hard for me not to think of this as one of the infamous TLC matches, but it was technically only a ladder match. That didn't keep the wrestlers from introducing incredible table spots into the fold. I am fairly certain careers were shortened in this match. Edge and Christian are retired. The Dudleyz are going into the HoF this year. And the Hardyz are still plugging along, but certainly not at the pace they once were. 18 years ago (whoa) these 3 teams reinvigorated the ladder match for hardcore wrestling fans.

Favorite Moments:

  • Chyna getting the big win over 3 men (and keeping her ripped pants on)

    • She looked like one trillion dollars in this match against MEN. This is exactly how someone of Chyna's stature should be booked in events like this.

  • Angle vs. Benoit vs. Jericho with each fall for a championship

    • 3 absolute workers in the ring facing off at the same time? Incredible. Angle lost both his titles and was never pinned. Excellent way to tell a number of stories from this match alone.

  • Too Cool and Kane teaming up on Pete Rose

    • Great entertainment value with a high-profile celebrity at the time. Weird seeing Kane and Too Cool together in any fashion, but whatever. It's Wrestlemania right?

Worst Match:

  • Terri Runnels vs. The Kat

    • What in the world was this? Both competitors made-out with the ref, Val Venis. Both competitors wore suggestive clothing. In 2018, when the entire focus is legitimizing Women's Wrestling, looking back at this match is rough. Hell, Chyna represented the women's division better than every competitor in this match. It's unfortunate that Mae Young and The Fabulous Moolah were involved as well because they both deserve better than that.

Worst Moments:

  • Ice T and the Godfather talking about pimpin' and telling the crowd to grab their b******

    • This just feels wrong on so many levels. Granted, these type of lyrics are in music in 2018 too, but that doesn't make it right.

  • Kat naked in a backstage promo as she gets ready for her match

    • Once again, just feels wrong in 2018 when you see Charlotte and Asuka and Sasha and so on and so forth being the forefront of the Women's revolution.

  • Blackman and Al Snow beating up a giant piece of cheese

    • It was just weird. Not sure if it meant to be so outside the box that it was funny, or if it was just completely off. Didn't work for me.

  • All the McMahons taking center-stage over the WWF Championship match

    • Not sure if this was supposed to be about someone winning the championship, or 4 McMahon members getting their time to shine

  • Fans throwing trash at the end of the main event

    • Just doesn't look good in any capacity.

Final Thoughts: This Wrestlemania was by far one of the worst I've seen. Doing research after the fact, I realized only one match was one-on-one, and it was "The Cat Fight." There was a lot of dead space in some of these matches, and in others, it was almost too chaotic (see the main-event). There were bright spots, like the Triangle Ladder Match, but one shining example in a sea of unfilled dreams is still bad. Thankfully, I know Mania X8 has some stellar matches to look forward to.

Does it Hold Up?

There was a lot of bad things about this Wrestlemania that simply don't make sense. The Triangle Ladder Match and the Benoit/Angle/Jericho match would absolutely hold up in any generation. The rest? Not so much. This is a 2-match card and not one of them was technically the main-event. Sad.
